How to Clean and Sanitize Your Bottled Water Cooler

Did you know that the human body is made up of 50% to 75% water? It’s true! It’s crucial to protect our bodies with the right amount of water, which many people tend to overlook. Drinking seven to eight glasses of water daily provides essential fluids that help our organs function properly. Water also helps to regulate our body temperature, flushes waste out of our body and carries nutrients to our cells. This is why numerous families choose to invest in hot and cold bottled water coolers. However, just like anything else, you must ensure your bottled water cooler is clean and sanitized. After all, the aim is to promote healthy bodies, not harm them.

Why Do You Need to Clean Your Bottled Water Cooler?

You may think that because your bottled water cooler is self-contained and is attached to the dispenser, it stays clean on its own. But this is not quite how it works. Over time, germs and bacteria can build up inside the cooler. These unwanted guests can contaminate your water, leading to health issues. Even though water is a clean liquid, the cooler itself can become a breeding ground for microbes if not properly maintained. Moreover, dust and debris from the environment can settle inside and on the cooler. This accumulation affects the water’s taste and can compromise its safety.

Steps to Clean & Sanitize Your Bottled Water Cooler

Always unplug your water cooler before starting the cleaning process.

Carefully take off the empty water bottle. Set it aside for recycling or pick-up if you’re not refilling it.

Use the spigots to drain any remaining water into a bucket or sink.

Mix a gallon of water with one tablespoon of unscented bleach or white vinegar. This will be your sanitizing solution.

Dip a clean cloth or sponge in the sanitizing solution. Wipe the inside of the cooler, especially around the spigots and the water reservoir. For hard-to-reach areas, use a small brush.

Remove any removable parts, like drip trays and spigots. Soak them in the sanitizing solution for at least five minutes.

After sanitizing, rinse all the cooler’s parts and interior with clean water to remove any residue left behind by the cleaning solution.

Wipe everything dry with a clean towel. Then, reassemble the cooler per the manufacturer’s instructions.

Carefully place a new, clean bottle onto the cooler. Ensure it’s properly seated to avoid leaks.

Plug the cooler back in. Please wait for the water to chill before using it.
